Farewell to my father-in-law

Posted in Uncategorized by Don Smith on January 19, 2010

I just wanted to take a moment and bid farewell to a great guy, my father-in-law, Donald Holmes.

Donald, as I called him, passed away on Jan. 9, 2010.

As was said at his funeral, “He didn’t have a sore word to say about anybody.”

He was a good man and he will be missed.

Here is his obit which ran in the local paper:

HOLMES, Donald A., age 62 of Wyckoff, died on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. Don was born in Glen Ridge, NJ and lived in Packanack Lake before moving to Wyckoff 35 years ago. Don was a Fork Lift Operator for the American Bible Society in Wayne for 36 years and then went to work at Home Supply and Lumber in Hawthorne about three years ago.

Surviving are his loving wife Karen; his son Michael of Mahwah; his daughter Laura and her husband Don Smith of Hawthorne; his brother William of Montoursville, PA and one niece Stacey Ballard of the Philadelphia Area. He is also survived by his in-laws Tunis and Garberdina of Wyckoff.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m. with a service at 8:00 p.m. at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff, Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midland Park Christian Reformed Church Cadet Program, 183 Godwin Ave., Midland Park, NJ 07432, or the Christian Health Care Center, 301 Sicomac Ave., Wyckoff, NJ 07481.

I am praying for you (and Laura, and the rest of your family). I am sorry for your loss. What a start to a new year. But we are blessed to have hope.

Thanks, Rachel. That is very sweet. And he was a man of faith. We know it is only a matter of time (ie. minutes – centuries) before we are reunited.
